Beautiful People #19: July 2016

Memes, Sparrow Singing, Writing

Beautiful People is a link-up hosted by Cait of Paper Fury and Sky of Further Up and Further In. Not only is it a lot of fun, but you get to learn a lot about your characters, too.

The past two BP I’ve focused on my main character Lyric, who I also refer to as Sparrow. But I want to shake things up a bit and focus on *drum roll*

My MC’s best friend, Peyton. Who I also refer to as Shrew.

They have nicknames for each other?? Sparrow & Shrew?? It’s a long story. Even they agree to that:

“I still don’t know how we landed on ‘Shrew,’ though, for your nickname. Isn’t that some kind of mouse?”
With a smirk, he mimicked an expression of shock. “Mole, actually. And hey, it was a time of necessity! Was I going to be called by a stupid number, or give myself a name, like a man?”
“You were five.”

He’s also one of the side main characters in the sequel book. *sigh* I love him.

  1. Do they want to get married and/or have children? Why or why not?

In Peyton’s world, or at least his small obscene corner of it, marriage isn’t a thing. Having and raising children isn’t something he remembers. But yes, I believe he would get married, to the right person.

2. What is their weapon of choice? (It doesn’t necessarily have to be a physical weapon.)

Words. It’s one of the few things he can utilize well, besides his voice. Whether it be acting, persuasion, singing… words are powerful tools.

3. What’s the nicest thing they’ve done for someone else, and why did they do it?

Perhaps the nicest thing he’s ever done was befriend Lyric, and dub her Sparrow. He doesn’t even realize that it was a nice thing, he was just being himself, but without having Peyton for her best friend, she wouldn’t be anywhere.

4. Have they ever been physically violent with someone, and what instigated it?

I can’t imagine Peyton being physical or violent with anyone. He runs from violence (not from danger, just violence)  and he most physical he gets with anyone just pushing them around or nudging them with his elbow. That’s only with close friends and other guys, and only done in a joking manner. Faced with the opportunity or the demand that he be violent towards someone, he would refuse.

5. Are they a rule-follower or a rebel?

He tends to be more of a rebel. Of course, he pretends to follow the rules, but in reality, he doesn’t care much for rules. Rules are guide lines.

6. Are they organized or messy?

Messy. Messy, messy, messy

7. What makes them feel loved, and who was the last person to make them feel that way?

Personal, quality time with a person makes him feel truly loved. Lyric was the last person to make him feel that way. But she always makes him feel that way.

8. What do they eat for breakfast?

Whatever is for breakfast. He doesn’t care, as long as it’s bland. Eggs, toast, cereal, or oranges. He loves oranges.

9. Have they ever lost someone close to them? What happened?

He doesn’t remember because he was young, but like most of the kids, he was taken from his family and home around the age of three to ‘try out,’ for the Institute. When you try out for the Institute it’s a “pass and never go home, or fail and never go home,” sort of ordeal. So he lost his home and family.

10.What’s their treat of choice? (Or, if not food, how else do they reward themselves?)

Dessert is his reward. Any kind of sweet, fruity dessert he loves, like sorbet or maybe just more oranges?

Hope you enjoyed getting to know Shrew a little better. I certainly learned more just typing this out. Beautiful People is such a great writing tool.

Thanks for reading!

  1. I would love learning more about Shrew. 🙂 He sounds like a really lovable and joking kind of character. Most of my characters seem to be rebels (I suppose that’s because I tend to create corrupt societies in my stories that need to be turned on their heads), but every now and then I throw in rule-followers to balance things out. XD

  2. Shrew seems like a cool guy! Sweet, reluctant to be confined by someone else’s rules, and not one to take himself too seriously. He sounds like a very good friend for Lyric, and for most anyone. Nice job!
